Scott and I have been trying to ride our bikes a lot more this summer (since we rode exactly ZERO times last summer, we are already ahead!). Last weekend we took a little road trip north of Des Moines to ride on the High Trestle Trail. This was a former railroad that has been converted to a bike trail...it is flat and straight and paved, my favorite kind! The highlight is the old railroad bridge. This is not the original "trestle" bridge that was built in 1912 for the trains...that was taken down in the 70's and this one was built to replace it. It was completed for the bike trail in 2011 with a really neat art installment.

The bridge is 130 feet high (13 stories!). Riding across it was very, very windy...Laurel did not like it, even in her Burley.

Just as we were leaving town in the morning, our friend Jacob called to see what we were doing. Ironically, he had just bought a bike in Pella that morning! We met him at my parent's house, my mom made him a delicious lunch, we threw his new bike on the rack, and he joined us. Too bad he had not ridden a bike in a long time, and had the hard, small seat that came with the bike...his legs and rear were very sore by the end of the day!

The entry pillars to the bridge...the stripes represent the veins of coal that can be found in this area.

We ended up riding 20.3 miles...longest ride so far! Now we just need to keep it up!
